We have been itching to get back outside in the sand pit to play with our diggers, but this rainy May weather has made that rather tricky! So, here at The Parenting Daily HQ we have had to be a bit more creative!

We do enjoy messy play in our house, but even I draw the line at bringing sand inside! So, I had a good rummage through our cupboards and came across a packet of Rice crispies, which we decided to use instead.

We set up the tuff tray indoors and filled it with the Rice crispies, then put lots of diggers and various other construction vehicles in. Both of my children really really enjoyed this activity, especially as it had the added bonus that they could eat what they were playing with!

This activity is a great one for toddlers, who are still exploring everything with their mouths, through to 6 or seven year olds who can play a bit more imaginatively. There are so many other types of food that you can use for this activity, here are some others that you could try:

  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Oats
  • Lentils
  • Chickpeas
  • Crackers
  • Other breakfast cereals (this is a great way to use up old cereal that has passed its best)
