Twinkl are celebrating National Story Telling Week 2023 by encouraging children to get inspired by the stories they read by taking creative control of a brand new Twinkl Originals storybook.

Global Educational Resource Publishing company, Twinkl are aiming to help close the gap amongst children who read for pleasure by inspiring more children to learn to love reading.

A recent study, from The Reading Agency found that 1 in 5 children did not read for pleasure at all in 2021 - that’s almost 3 million children. It is believed that if children are able to choose what they read, they’re more likely to be inspired and feel connected to a story, leaving them wanting to continue reading to find out what happens next.

That is why, this National Story Telling Week, Twinkl are taking self-selected reading to the next level by giving children complete control over the plot of The Kindness Games, a brand new Twinkl Originals story.

The Kindness Games follows Leon and Meena, two Year 3 pupils, who although are classmates, are not friends. Each with their own competitive nature, the story shares their journey as they challenge each other to win The Kindness Games by completing the most acts of kindness to earn gold stars.

Their teacher, Miss Kenny, introduces The Kindness Games - an Olympics of niceness to the whole class, with the winner of the games being the child that gets the most gold stars for completing their kind deeds.

At the start of National Story Telling Week, children will be able to read the beginning of the story, and then vote together on what they think should happen in the next chapter. The following day, the next chapter will then be released on our live blog which can be accessed for free by anyone, meaning we are giving the power to children, so they can decide how the story turns out.

Being able to read for pleasure has been found to help transform a child’s attitude to learning, lessons and life. Not only does reading for pleasure support children’s education and abilities in the classroom; it also helps build key interpersonal skills like empathy, which is a crucial part of growing up.

Join us for National Story Telling Week 2023, between January 30th and February 5th, where we will be encouraging parents and educators to get involved with their children, by following our story online. Further information can be found here.
