I love Julia Donaldson and the A squash and a Squeeze book is always a favourite amongst my kids. So, inspired by her fabulous books I have created this fun and educational tray activity, which includes some toy animals and a dolls house to represent the characters in the book. It's a great activity to encourage children to be creative.

What you need for the activity:

  • A tuff tray or blanket
  • Some toy animals from the story (A cow, a pig, a goat and a hen)
  • Some toy figures from the story (an old woman and a wise old man)
  • Something to represent the house in the story, we used a dolls house with a few bits of furniture in.
  • You can add things like fences and pens to make the outside bit for the animals.

You can see how I set my activity up in the video below.

What you need to do?

I really try to let my children lead these activities, so don’t go in with too many ideas about how it will go. You could read the story at the beginning of the activity to familiarise yourselves with the book (unless your children are like mine and know it off by heart!). The main aim here is to just have fun and let the children be creative.

If you don’t already have the book you can buy it here.
