Top 10 British camping destinations this summer

Thanks to the hot weather we are experiencing at the moment, now is the perfect time to focus our attention on the beautiful British coastal destinations we are so lucky to have. And who doesn’t love a good old fashioned camping trip in the summer? Nowadays, with so many wonderful glamping options available too, there really is something for everyone.

With this in mind, Holidu, the search engine for holiday rentals decided to determine the must-visit spots. The ranking was compiled by looking at the number of camping options available and the popularity of the destinations on Google, as well as the average summer sun hours to identify the top ten seaside destinations for camping this summer!

1. Whitby

The number one camping destination for summer 2021 is Whitby! This seaside town is located in Yorkshire in North East England. Whitby came out as the most searched for destination, and also boasts an average of 324 sun hours from July - September, making it a perfect spot for summer camping trips. 

2. Ingoldmells 

In second place, we have Ingoldmells, a quaint coastal village in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. Ingoldmells is a small town that has a lovely dog-friendly beach. Head to Fantasy Island for a fun-filled family day out to remember! Shopping lovers will also delight there, as it is also home to Europe’s largest seven-day market.

3. St. Ives 

Arguably one of the most popular destinations on this list, St. Ives frequently tops rankings of Britain’s best coastal destinations and gains a respectable third place in this one. Its stunning white sand beaches stretch along the coast and are perfect for surfing.

4. Skegness

Next up is Skegness in Lincolnshire, a town that is loved by many! It is home to a beautiful, Blue Flag awarded, sandy beach. Skegness has an abundance of activities, from go-karting and ten-pin bowling to crazy golf and simply going for a relaxing stroll along the beach. 

5. Bournemouth 

Bournemouth prides itself as being the “home of the UK’s best beach”, as voted in TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice awards for the second year in a row in 2019, so it’s no surprise that this makes the town a perfect place for your summer camping staycation! With seven miles of golden sandy beaches and an abundance of things to do and see, Bournemouth is a superb choice.

6. Newquay 

One of many Cornish destinations in this ranking, in sixth place we have the town of Newquay. Another popular surfing spot, Fistral and Watergate Bay beaches are a must-visit. Further attractions in the area include the Blue Reef Aquarium and Newquay Zoo!

7. Scarborough 

Heading now to Scarborough, a resort town on England’s North Sea coast. The nearby Flamingo Land is the ideal place for a day of fun for the whole family! Nearby attractions include Scarborough Castle and two bays with sandy beaches.

8. Weymouth

Weymouth is located in Dorset on the Jurassic Coast. You will find colourful beach huts dotted along its sandy beach, and plenty of attractions nearby, such as the Weymouth Sealife Park that is home to sharks, turtles and stingrays. 

9. Blackpool 

In ninth place, we have Blackpool, a seaside resort famed for its Pleasure Beach, an old-school amusement park with vintage wooden roller coasters. Blackpool has actually been one of Britain's most popular seaside resorts since the 1800s and is much loved by many still to this day!

10. Great Yarmouth 

The final destination in the ranking is Great Yarmouth, a seaside town in Norfolk on the east coast. Well-known for its long sandy beach, the resort town also has many museums, an aquarium and even an amusement park to keep you entertained whilst on holiday.

 

Methodology:

All British coastal towns were considered. Popularity was assessed by the number of Google searches for "camping + destination name", but the number of camping and glamping sites available and the average number of hours of sunshine were also considered to make these rankings the best destinations to go camping this summer.
