The Very Hungry Caterpillar

An interactive Easter adventure to feed curious minds

Saturday 2nd April – Monday 18th April at Kew Gardens

Saturday 2nd April – Sunday 24th April at Wakehurst

  • A new family adventure for Easter 2022
  • Eric Carle’s much-loved book brought to life with interactive installations
  • Takes place at Kew Gardens and Wakehurst, Kew’s wild botanic garden in Sussex
  • Supported by Frugi

The Very Hungry Caterpillar arrives at Kew Gardens for Easter 2022 with a brand-new interactive adventure to nourish curious minds of all ages. Based on Eric Carle’s best-selling children’s book, the trail will recreate the journey of the caterpillar from egg to butterfly though a series of 3D installations, including a variety of fruit, a cosy chrysalis, and a bright, beautiful butterfly, each recreating the signature aesthetic of the much-loved book.

Visitors to the trail will experience the caterpillar’s metamorphosis as they journey around the gardens, digesting facts about the wonder of nature and the close connections between plant and insect life on earth. Following in the caterpillar’s footsteps, they will wind their way through an assortment of fruit sculptures, each varying in size, playing with sensations of proportion and perspective to give visitors a unique insect’s eye view of the natural world.

Alongside the trail, guests will also be able to explore Kew Gardens’ seasonal plants, with tulips, bluebells, magnolias, and cherry blossom all bursting into life. As well as this, visitors of all ages can learn more about the vital role which insects play in shaping a healthy garden as they enjoy Kew’s UNESCO World Heritage landscape in spring, and can create an insect haven in their own green spaces with a range of seeds and plants from the Kew Shop

Wakehurst, Kew’s wild botanic garden in Sussex, will also host its very own trail until Sunday 24th April in its gardens bursting with blossom and colour. A range of interactive additional activities will be available for visitors to enjoy, including Feeding Frenzy where hungry explorers must find all the food that the caterpillar needs to transform into a beautiful butterfly and win a special prize.

Sandra Botterell, Director of Marketing and Commercial Enterprise at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew said: “It’s wonderful to be able to welcome visitors to enjoy this new interactive trail for Easter 2022. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a story which has introduced many generations to the wonder of nature since it was first published in 1969. Bringing this much-loved tale to life within the unique surroundings of our two botanic gardens, Kew Gardens and Wakehurst, will allow visitors of all ages to encounter new and exciting perspectives on the world around us, and the vital role which plants and fungi play in all of our lives.”

Melissa Satterly, Brand Manager at Rocket Licensing, added: "We're thrilled to be partnering with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The synergy between their botanic gardens and The Very Hungry Caterpillar brand is perfect and enables us to create a fully immersive experience for visitors young and old. Kew Gardens houses the largest and most diverse botanical and mycological collections in the world, and as such is the ideal destination for seasoned nature lovers and young enthusiasts alike. After such a long time of everyone being stuck at home, we're excited to create a wonderful day out to bring families together, while celebrating the emergence of spring and a shared passion for both the natural world, and the classic Eric Carle tale."

The Very Hungry Caterpillar sets the scene for Food Forever, an exciting new programme for summer 2022 at Kew Gardens which shines a light on the fragile future of food.
