With energy prices set to rise significantly this winter, many people are paying closer attention to their utility bills. To help reduce the impact of rising costs, here are a few simple steps you can take to reduce your household energy usage.

Be Wiser with your thermostat

Over 80% of a home’s energy consumption is used for heating and hot water, so looking at new ways of controlling this can have a big impact on your bills. A smart multi-room heating system is a great long-term investment that will save you money by only heating the rooms you’re using.

Upgrading from basic thermostat controls to the Wiser Multi-Zone smart heating system can save up to £200 a year on energy bills, by giving you control of your heating room-to-room. The system also features clever smart modes such as Eco and Away Mode which work out the most economical way to run your heating and reduce temperatures when your home is empty.

Follow advice on switching energy supplier

With energy firms collapsing and prices rising, it’s important to follow the latest advice on switching energy suppliers. The market is hugely changeable, so do your homework, listen to energy experts and visit comparison websites to help find the best deals that suit your circumstances.

Invest in energy efficient appliances

When the time comes to replace appliances such as dishwashers or washing machines, make sure you take into consideration their energy efficiency credentials, as this will impact your home’s energy usage. The easiest way to compare different models is to look at the energy-efficiency rating label. Research shows that swapping your old kitchen appliances for energy-saving models could save you more than £200 per year*.

Switch over to energy-saving light bulbs

Switching to energy-saving light-bulbs, such as LED or halogen, is one of the easiest ways to reduce your energy consumption. LEDs are favourable, as they are the most energy-efficient and can cost as little as £1.71 a year to run*.

Even if you’re using energy-saving bulbs, it’s still good to turn off lights in empty rooms. It’s easy to do this with the help of smart plugs, such as the Wiser Plug, which allow you to set schedules and turn lamps on and off, using the Wiser app.

Shower smarter

The length of time you shower not only impacts your water usage, it affects your energy consumption too. Shortening your shower reduces the amount of energy used to heat the water, helping to reduce your energy bills. According to research, a family of four could save as much as £75 a year, if each person spent just one minute less in the shower**.
