Households are going potty over empty toilet roll tubes, dirty washing on the floor and finding dirty plates next to the dishwasher, as Brits’ biggest household bugbears are revealed in new research.
Emptying the bins without putting a new bag in and messy bedrooms are also cited as major causes of household arguments across the UK.
The survey of more than 2,000 adults by Cushelle, marking the launch of its new Tubeless toilet tissue, uncovered that Brits have at least two household disagreements a day, despite 84 percent admitting that they are usually over something trivial.
TV presenter and personality Kate Thornton says, “Being a mum of a teenager means there’s no shortage of bugbears in my house. Whether we’re arguing over leaving the lights on, or what I like to the call The Zone, where piles of dirty clothes are conveniently placed near but not in the washing basket. Nothing frustrates me more than when I need the toilet and find an empty tube waiting for me, so it’s no surprise that more than half of all household arguments are about changing the loo roll. “Although living with our loved ones is something we cherish, sharing our homes can certainly come with its challenges and the occasional disagreement or two! Although the research shows that overall Brits are arguing less than in 2021, there has been a 43% increase in the number of household disagreements over loo roll. Now, every month more than half (56%) of all UK household arguments are about loo roll!
According to the survey, family rows take up six minutes of every day, equating to 36.5 hours a year, and when it comes to who is at fault for the daily disputes, a third (33 percent) of Brits aren’t afraid to put the blame on their significant other, with almost half (45 percent) innocently believing they themselves are the peacekeepers in their own homes. What’s more, women are more likely to blame their partners, whereas men are more likely to own up to being the culprit.

The communal bathroom is the source of many frustrating bugbears, with leaving loo roll tubes on the floor or windowsill, leaving the toilet seat up and not changing the empty toilet roll listed as the most common. Forgetful Brits are to blame for the loo roll ruckus, with over half (52 per cent) using this as an excuse for not changing it, 22 percent say they are in too much of a rush, and 15 percent simply can’t be bothered to make the change.
