Search for clues among 26 of our castles, forts and abbeys nationwide to receive a certificate and a chocolate egg reward, or look out for historic performers and play games at our brand-new Easter Escapade events. As St George’s Day arrives, get ready to meet people from throughout history before watching the festival’s fiery finale when England’s patron saint will fight the ultimate battle.

New for 2023 are English Heritage’s Easter Escapades. These four days of fun will involve plenty of historical performers as well as traditional Easter-themed games. Learn how this holiday has been celebrated through the years as you try your hand at egg and spoon racing, or stop to listen to one of many storytelling sessions taking place throughout the day. The celebrations will take place amongst castles, historic gardens and prehistoric landscapes, so there is lots to see for the whole family. Get ready for an action-packed day out full of egg-cellent activities!

What better way to find your way around a castle than an adventure quest? This year there are 26 sites across the country to choose from; families can hunt through the ruins of Birdoswald Roman Fort, the spring gardens of Audley End House, the grounds of Queen Victoria’s treasured Isle of Wight home Osborne, and many more. Search for hidden clues and try traditional Easter games, including egg and spoon races and egg rolling. Those who complete the quest will receive an adventurer’s certificate and a chocolate treat – so get cracking!

St George’s Festival at Wrest Park

Celebrate England’s legendary patron saint at Wrest Park with a weekend of games, performances and activities. This festival is the largest celebration of St George’s Day in the country, and will culminate in England’s most legendary battle, as visitors will see gallant St George mount his mighty steed to take on his fiery green nemesis in a dramatic showdown. The event will feature historic re-enactors; step into medieval times and meet those who popularised England’s patron saint, while exploring the beautiful grounds of Wrest Park.
