As children prepare for World Book Day on Thursday, March 2, parents across the country are united in searching for the perfect costume for their little ones.
According to research* by the UK’s largest online fancy dress and party retailer, Party Delights, searches for World Book Day costumes have hit 40,000 this month in the UK - a 48 per cent increase on 2022.
And, as the excitement builds, the hashtag #worldbookday has featured in 13,000 posts on social platform TikTok in the last seven days alone with over 44million views.
It’s a day that youngsters get the chance to celebrate their best-loved books – and sporting a costume of their favourite character is a must.

For the girls
Little bookworms are expected to be celebrating Roald Dahl this year with costumes of Veruca Salt, Matilda and her arch nemesis Miss Trunchbull proving popular.
Alice in Wonderland is capturing imaginations too with Alice, the Cheshire Cat and Queen of Hearts in high demand.
Other top picks include Gangsta Granny, Mary Poppins and Harry Potter’s Hermione Granger.
For the boys
Like the girls, boys are also turning to Roald Dahl with Willy Wonka, Fantastic Mr. Fox and the BFG top of the list.
With the wizarding world of Harry Potter still casting a spell on young readers’ imaginations, the book’s much-loved characters are a firm World Book Day favourite, with Harry and Hagrid the most popular choices.
Mr. Stink, Ratburger and Billionaire Boy are the perfect choice for lovers of David Walliams’ imaginative and hilarious stories.
For the teachers
World Book Day isn’t just about the kids, teachers can get in on the fun too!
And this year it’s not just the little ones stepping into a world of fantasy, teachers are predicted to lead by example and bring Road Dahl, Hogwarts and Wonderland into the classroom for World Book Day.
Harry Potter favourites include Professor McGonagall, Dumbledore and Hagrid, while Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter and Roald Dahl’s Oompa Loompa are a great option for adults too.
