Coronation and May Half Term family days out in London

Madame Tussauds – Royal Zone

Madame Tussauds London opened the brand-new The Royal Palace experience, which will allow guests to go beyond the gates of Buckingham Palace and get a sneak peek into Royal life in this historic Coronation year.

The monarch, who will be coronated on 6th May, has been given a stunning update to honour the opening of the new experience. Continuing its centuries-old legacy of painstakingly dressing Royal figures, the Madame Tussauds London team has paid homage to the outfit His Majesty wore for the first-ever State Banquet of his reign, in November 2022. The attraction’s wardrobe team spent 140 hours finessing King Charles III’s new look, working with medal specialists and collectors to ensure no detail was forgotten, from his nine miniature medals and diamond Lesser George medal to the insignia of the Order of the Garter.

In addition to rubbing shoulders with The King and Queen Consort and the Prince and Princess of Wales in the Throne Room, visitors to The Royal Palace will get to pose with afternoon tea in the Royal Drawing Room or mingle with some of the Palace’s most notable celebrity guests. Nestled among the British Royals are acting and sporting royalty including Sir Mo Farah and Dame Judi Dench, whose figures have also had a regal redress befitting of the new experience

London Eye – Coronation Pod

To celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III, the lastminute.com London Eye is offering guests the unique opportunity to ‘step behind the royal coronation curtain’ and have their very own crowning experience 135m in the air.

Running from Saturday 29 April to Monday 8 May, the brand new Coronation Capsule will honour this once-in-a-generation moment, replicating the grandeur and gothic design of Westminster Abbey in a London Eye pod – while offering visitors a bird’s eye view of the real historical church where 38 coronations have taken place since 1066.

The sky-high majestic capsule will be transformed creating the illusion of ribbed vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows and carved stone columns. The Coronation Capsule will also feature wooden benches inspired by the Abbey’s quire stalls, the black and white marble floor motif and the intricate blue and gold designs featured on the walls as you enter the High Altar where the Coronation will take place on 6 May.

Guests will be invited to sit in a re-creation of the 700-year-old Coronation Chair, complete with years of schoolboy and tourist graffiti, and hold replicas of the Crown Jewels - St. Edward's Crown, the Sovereign's Orb and the Sovereign's Sceptre - to act out their very own coronation and take the ultimate stately selfie while flying 443ft above the capital to commemorate the occasion.
