As kids get ready to break up for summer, many families will be searching for tips and tricks to keep young children entertained for less during the long break.

Jo Middleton, author, podcaster and blogger at Slummy Single Mummy has shared her quirky recipe for a well-known jammie biscuit that parents can use to spend quality time with their children AND enjoy a tasty snack – for just 10p per cookie.*

The recipe is part of a new online hub from debt experts Carrington Dean that aims to offer advice for parents on a budget this summer – Summer Holiday Survival Guide: Have Fun Without the Financial Stress.

Jo said: “Cooking up a quirky recipe is a great way to while away the hours with the family and enjoy a delicious treat. I’m often trying out new things – usually cakes and snacks – that don’t involve too many fussy ingredients.

“The jammie biscuit has always been a hit in my household though, and I’m sure it will inspire other parents who are looking for affordable things to do this summer.”

Carrington Dean’s online hub is packed with advice on everything from childcare to keeping kids busy and feeding a family for less. It also signposts to organisations who can provide support for struggling families.

Layla Johnson, regional manager at Carrington Dean, hopes that the guide will help parents who are struggling with the cost of living crisis this summer.

She said, “It’s no secret that costs are rising everywhere but it’s particularly challenging for parents. Our own research shows that parents of children under the age of 18 across the UK have an average debt level of £17,402 – this is significantly higher than the national average debt level of £15,998.

“For those on a low income or benefits, many of the support packages families rely on throughout term-time suddenly stop over summer, making it an even more difficult time.

“I can relate to those who feel like they have to put a brave face on, and end up spending more than they have to ensure everyone has a good holiday.

“All the pressure to ‘make memories’ can leave you feeling anxious and isolated – but kids don’t need endless trips and treats to have fun. Most of the time they’re perfectly happy playing with their friends in the park, or enjoying a run-around on the beach.

“To help people have a stress-free summer without breaking the bank, we’ve put together this handy survival guide. It’s jam-packed with ideas for budget-friendly holidays, activities and meals, as well as tips for managing childcare and signposting you to the right support services if you’re struggling to afford essentials.
