While many parents try to make their little one’s room as colourful and vibrant as possible, this isn’t always the best idea. A bright and busy room can easily stimulate children’s senses, which is great during the daytime but can make winding down in the evening more of a challenge. So, to help your child get the good quality sleep they need for keeping up their energy throughout the day, you may want to consider finding ways to make your little one’s room more calming.

But how exactly can you make a relaxing bedroom for your child that they’ll still enjoy spending time in during the day? To help you create a calm but fun space for your child to enjoy, the interiors experts Casa Bella are here to share their top tips for creating a relaxing kid’s bedroom.

Decorate with gentle neutral and pastel tones

Choosing a soft and neutral colour palette for the walls, bedding, and furniture can make your little one’s bedroom feel much calmer and more tranquil to create an ideal sleeping environment. While bright and vibrant shades like red and orange can be stimulating for the mind, neutral shades like cream, beige, and sand can have the opposite effect and create a more calming atmosphere. Neutral shades have plenty of other benefits too, including being timeless and versatile and making a room feel more spacious.

However, there’s no need to avoid more colourful shades altogether in your child’s bedroom. Pastel shades like light blues, greens, or lavender can also promote relaxation and create a tranquil atmosphere. To make their bedroom feel truly like their own space, you could consider creating an accent wall painted in a pastel variation of your child’s favourite colour. Another benefit of decorating with neutral shades is that they are incredibly versatile, so you shouldn’t struggle to match your accent wall with the rest of your interiors.

Opt for natural materials

Incorporating natural elements into the bedroom design is a great way to both make your child’s bedroom look great and create a relaxing atmosphere. These natural materials can create a connection to nature and promote a calming environment. Plus, many natural materials, such as types of wood and wool, come in neutral shades to perfectly complement the room’s colour palette.

There are plenty of different ways to incorporate natural materials into a child’s bedroom, from cosy wool throws and rugs to rattan headboards and wooden chests of drawers. You may also want to consider incorporating plants in the room. Not only do they look great, but they can be beneficial for the environment of the room too. Just make sure to keep them out of reach of particularly inquisitive little ones.

Create zones in the room

A child’s bedroom is for far more than just sleeping — it can also be where they play, read, relax, and do their homework. To ensure that their bedroom is an ideal space for all these activities, consider splitting the room up into different zones. This will allow your little one to switch from one task or activity to the next with minimal distraction, and it can also make the space feel much more organised too.

There are plenty of simple ways to create separate zones in even a small room. A simple rattan divider screen can be effective for separating a working or playing area away from the rest of the room. You could also use rugs to zone rooms, such as having a designated rug for playing, or by placing a rug next to their bookcase with a cosy chair or beanbag to create a reading nook.

Reduce clutter to avoid stimulation

While it can be difficult to keep a child’s room tidy and clutter-free, doing so can have a positive impact on the serenity of the room. By keeping your little one’s bedroom tidy and organized, you are reducing the number of distractions and creating a sense of order. Clutter can be overwhelming for children and can therefore impact their ability to relax, so it’s a good idea to find ways to reduce the mess.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways you can declutter your child’s room. The best place to start is by investing in more storage solutions. Chest of drawers and sideboards can help you hide away the bulk of your little one’s possessions, while wall shelves can be used for the items they want to display or don’t need easy access to. You may also want to consider helping your child have a sort out of their possessions to ensure there isn’t anything they don’t want taking up precious storage space.

Incorporate cosy additions

What better way to create a relaxing environment in your little one’s bedroom than with some cosy additions? There are plenty of ways to do this in the bedroom, one of the best being incorporating soft furnishings. Not only can cushions, throws, rugs, and other soft furnishings make the room look much cosier, but they can help keep the room warm to make it easier to drift off. Soft furnishings can also act as sound absorbers to reduce echoes and background noise in a room and create a quieter and more serene environment.

The right lighting can also make a room feel much cosier. Incorporating cosy lighting in a bedroom can create a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and comfort. You can do this by opting for light bulbs that emit warm and soft tones, such as warm white or soft white bulbs. You may also want to use multiple light sources, including table lamps, floor lamps, and overhead lighting to ensure you get the perfect lighting at every time of day. And for a playful and cosy touch that your child is sure to love, fairy lights are ideal for adding a subtle illumination and enchanting atmosphere.

“Whether you’re looking to help your little one drift off easier, or simply create a serene space of their own to relax in, a calming bedroom environment can do wonders. And while we may associate children’s bedrooms with colourful chaos, it is actually relatively easy to create a more relaxing and less stimulating environment for them to sleep in.

“Neutral and pastel shades can be ideal for making a bedroom more relaxing, especially in comparison to more vibrant and stimulating hues. Clutter can also be stimulating and distracting, making it difficult for your child to switch off, so investing in more storage space is a great way to reduce the mess. Plus, having ample storage space and giving each of your child’s possessions a home can even help them learn to put things away and tidy up for themselves.”
