Dewsbury Primary School design a garden fit for The King

HM King Charles III ‘deeply touched’ by letter from Thornhill Junior and Infant School

Dewsbury-based Thornhill Junior and Infant School has received a letter of acknowledgement from His Majesty The King, after the school sent eco-garden designs as part of the nationwide Coronation celebrations.

In May, Eco-Councillors at Thornhill J and I School ran a competition for fellow pupils to design an Eco-Friendly Garden fit for The King. In acknowledgement of The King’s own interest in environmental issues, all designs had to include as many eco-friendly and sustainable features as possible.

Students included features such as rainwater butts, compost bins, wildflower areas, bug hotels, organic vegetable patches, and lots more.

Teachers chose three winners, one each from Foundation, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, who each won a pot of The King’s own Duchy Organic jam.

All entries, winning or not, were then sent to the palace along with a letter from the Eco Council detailing our work and the idea behind the competition.

Recently, the school received a letter of acknowledgement from The King, thanking the school for the ‘wonderfully kind letter and drawings’ and wishing the ‘warmest good wishes to all of the pupils and staff at Thornhill Junior and Infant School’.

Acting Headteacher at Thornhill Junior and Infant School, Jen Rylance, said: “The teachers and students here at Thornhill have been incredibly excited to have received the letter and it has been a great boost for everyone at the beginning of the school year.

“We are incredibly proud of the students for their designs and thought into the eco-friendly gardens, and we would all like to thank His Majesty for acknowledging the letter.”

Thornhill Junior and Infant School forms part of Focus-Trust, a charitable primary school trust based in the North West of England and West Yorkshire that aims to provide great schools at the heart of communities where children thrive, achieve, and succeed.
