According to a new survey by photoprinting company CEWE, mothers are the UK's best gift givers, with over one-third of people (38%) saying that mums give the best presents. And with people spending the most amount of time shopping for Christmas gifts for their significant others, it’s no surprise that partners came in second, with 28% saying they were the best gift givers.

In contrast, dads found themselves in a less festive light, being named the worst gift-givers and most likely to disappoint. The survey revealed that while dads may have good intentions, their choices often miss the mark compared to mums.

What Makes a Great Gift?

While some might assume price determines gift success, 75% of respondents disagree, saying meaningful presents that reflect personal connections resonate most. Personalised gifts like photo books and calendars are especially prized, with 40% calling them their favourite type of gift.

Top gift categories include clothes (31%), perfume (24%) and jewellery (24%), all of which rarely disappoint. On the other hand, something people already have (22%), a pair of socks (15%) and an ugly Christmas jumper (15%) topped the list of the least popular presents. The study even uncovered some shockingly bizarre gifts, including single pieces of fruit, household mops and even lumps of coal.

Gift Shopping Struggles

Brits dedicate the most time to finding the perfect presents for their partners (42%), followed by parents (25%) and siblings (10%). The top reasons for disappointment are receiving a gift that doesn’t align with personal interests (36%), getting something impractical (23%) or discovering it’s been regifted (18%).

Despite the challenges, Brits are gracious gift recipients, with 36% expressing genuine gratitude for any gift, even if it misses the mark. Meanwhile, 33% admitted to feigning excitement, and 17% confessed to quietly stashing the unwanted gift away.

Making Christmas Personal

The research underscores a growing appreciation for personalised gifts. Petra Felgen, Managing Director of CEWE UK, said:

“With 75% of people valuing sentimental gifts, it’s clear that meaningful presents resonate the most and truly show how much you care,” said Petra Felgen, Managing Director of CEWE UK. “We know the true value of creating unique and personalised gifts that are made with love, including our popular CEWE Photobook, which allows you to capture cherished memories that your loved ones will treasure for years to come.”
