Let Your Child’s Creativity Shine with This Fun Makeup Activity
If your little one is anything like my 8-year-old daughter, then makeup is probably already on their radar. My daughter is obsessed with all things beauty and fashion (which is equal parts really cute and terrifying!). She loves playing with children’s makeup palettes, but I’m not overly keen on her putting them on her delicate skin just yet.
That’s when I had a lightbulb moment—why not let her experiment with makeup, but on paper instead? I created printable sheets with different faces that she could ‘make up’ using her makeup palettes and brushes. It was such a hit that I wanted to share it with other parents looking for creative, mess-free, and skin-safe activities!
Why This Activity Is Perfect for Beauty-Loving Kids
Kids love to feel grown-up, and for many, makeup is part of that. This simple but super fun activity gives them the chance to experiment with makeup in a safe, creative way. Plus, it taps into their artistic side, which is always a win.
My daughter has had so much fun applying blush, eyeshadow, and lipstick to the paper faces, and the best part? No glittery mess on her face (or mine!). She even uses the makeup brushes someone gifted her for Christmas to get the full ‘grown-up’ experience.
What You’ll Need:
- Printable face charts (I made a bunch with different styles and expressions)
- Child-friendly makeup palettes
- Makeup brushes (bonus if they have their own mini set!)
- A flat surface for them to work on
How It Works:
- Print the Face Charts: I created some simple designs on Canva (Any program with images or graphics should work fine for this) and printed them off, and since they’re easy to replace, she can go through as many as she likes without me worrying.
- Set Up the Makeup Station: We laid everything out on a table—the face charts, her makeup palettes, and her special brushes.
- Get Creative: Then she got to work, applying makeup to the faces. She carefully added blush to the cheeks, experimented with bold eyeshadow looks, and even tried contouring (yes, really!).
- Repeat and Share: Because these are printable, she can start over whenever she wants or even invite friends to join in. It’s been a hit during playdates!
The Benefits of This Activity:
- Safe Play: No makeup on delicate or skin—just all the fun!
- Creative Expression: It’s been amazing watching her experiment with colors and techniques.
- Confidence Building: She feels super grown-up and proud of her creations.
- Perfect for Playdates: It’s an easy, no-mess group activity.
- Portable Entertainment: We’ve even taken these along to restaurants and on car rides—perfect for keeping her entertained.
A Fun, Screen-Free Option for Kids
I’m always looking for activities that don’t involve screens, and this has become one of our go-to options. It encourages creativity, keeps her entertained, and best of all, it’s something we can do together.
If your child is showing an interest in makeup or fashion, give this a go! It’s a simple, fun, and safe way for them to explore their creative side—and you might even find yourself wanting to join in (I did!).
Let me know if you try it out—I’d love to hear how your little ones get on!
