We moved into our new house 6 months ago and I have been slowly decorating all of the rooms. The next project on the list is my 8 year old daughters bedroom. I have been hearing lots of people talking about designing rooms and gardens using Chat GPT, so I thought I would give it a go.

My daughter is a fiery second child who certainly knows her mind. Any ideas I have suggested to her have been instantly dismissed, and she has been trying to explain her vision to me, the challenge here being that I am struggling to visualise what she is trying to tell me. I had the thought for her to tell me what she wanted and I would put it into Chat GPT and see if that could create an image that would help get my daughter and I on the same page.

I had shown my daughter a few pictures, and she had said she liked the look of the half wall scalloped paint look, but she wanted it in multiple colours. I put the colours she wanted in, and this is the image that came back

I asked for 3 pastel colours: pink, green and purple. The only thing we would change is that we want the colours to be equal. This then gave us some inspiration to head to our local B&Q and pick out some paint samples.

This process has been so quick and easy I thought I would put together a guide for other parents on how to use Chat GPT to design your own child’s bedroom.

In this guide, I’ll show you how and why you should use ChatGPT to help redesign your little one’s bedroom—plus a simple step-by-step guide to get you started.

✨ Why Use ChatGPT to Design a Kid’s Room?

Here’s what makes ChatGPT such a fab tool for parents:

  • It saves time – No more endless Pinterest scrolling or decision fatigue.
  • It’s totally customisable – You can tell it your child’s age, interests, room size, budget, and style.
  • It sparks creativity – ChatGPT can suggest layout ideas, colour palettes, storage solutions, and even DIY projects!
  • It’s free to use – Perfect if you’re working to a budget.
  • Great for Collaboration This has been such a great tool for me to work together with my daughter, after all, it’s her bedroom so I want her to have it just how she wants it.

Think of it like chatting with an interior designer—just one who’s available 24/7 and never judges your toy storage crisis.

🛏️ Step-by-Step: How to Use ChatGPT to Redesign Your Child’s Bedroom

Step 1: Think About What You Need

Before jumping into ChatGPT, have a little think about:

  • Your child’s age and personality
  • What the room is used for (sleep, play, homework, storage?)
  • The size and shape of the room
  • Any specific colours, themes, or items you want to include
  • Your budget

Write a short list—or just keep it in mind!

Step 2: Open ChatGPT and Start with a Prompt

Type something like this:

“Can you help me redesign my 6-year-old daughter’s bedroom? She loves rainbows and reading. The room is small and needs toy storage, a reading nook, and a single bed. I’d love a cheerful colour scheme and budget-friendly ideas.”

  • Themes and colour palettes
  • Layout suggestions
  • Furniture and storage ideas
  • Decor tips and DIY hacks

You can tweak your prompt or ask follow-up questions as you go!

Step 3: Ask Specific Questions

Here are some helpful things to ask next:

  • “Can you suggest space-saving furniture for a small bedroom?”
  • “What colours would suit a calm but fun toddler’s room?”
  • “How can I make a shared bedroom work for two siblings?”
  • “Any budget decor ideas that aren’t too babyish?”

The more detail you give, the more tailored your answers will be!

Step 4: Save & Plan

Once you’ve got your ideas:

  • Copy and paste your favourite bits into a notes app or mood board
  • Search for the suggested items or DIY ideas online
  • Take your time putting it all together!

Bonus tip: Ask ChatGPT for a shopping list or project checklist too!

💡 Real-Life Examples of What ChatGPT Can Help With:

  • Design a princess-themed bedroom that still grows with your child
  • Create a sensory-friendly space for a neurodivergent child
  • Plan a shared boy/girl sibling room with personal touches for both
  • Maximise small spaces with clever storage hacks
  • Choose paint colours and even create a matching Pinterest board!
