How Our Founder Lizz Uses the Yoto Mini With Her Children

We got our first Yoto Mini for my daughter at Christmas, and it’s been such a huge hit that we were really keen to get one for my son too. Our children use the Yoto Mini in so many ways, making it an incredibly versatile product—perfect both for on-the-go entertainment and as a bedtime staple.

Things We Love About the Yoto Mini

1. It’s Portable!
We’ve used items like the Echo Dot for bedtime stories and podcasts before, but it always became a real challenge any time we travelled or stayed away from home. The Yoto Mini comes with us wherever we go—no cables, no fuss —and the battery life is fantastic. It means hours of screen-free entertainment, and we can keep bedtime routines as normal as possible wherever we are. We got the Yoto Adventure Jacket, which is brilliant for protecting it from being dropped and my children love the choice of colours.

2. Recording Our Own Stories
My children love listening to me reading their favourite books, and this is so easy to do on the Yoto App. I simply record myself reading directly into the app, create a playlist for that book, and then download the whole story onto a blank Yoto card. The kids love listening to these personal story cards, and honestly, this is one of my favourite things about Yoto—I feel like I’m creating something special that my children will cherish (and maybe even use with their own children one day).

3. The App
Seven months in, I feel like we’ve barely scratched the surface with everything you can do through the app. Some of my favourite features are the ability to control who is listening to what—our two Yoto Minis are linked to the app, and I can easily manage them both. My children have completely different tastes in stories and podcasts, so I can make sure they each get their own listening experience through the app. I’ve found the whole setup process, from pairing to exploring content, really simple and parent-friendly. You can even set alarms through the app and have the Yoto Mini play their favourite radio station when they wake up.

How We Use Our Yoto Mini

At Bedtime: This doesn’t replace me reading a bedtime story, but it definitely enhances our bedtime routine. The kids can wind down listening to relaxing stories as they fall asleep.
In the Morning: We use it as an alarm clock, with gentle wake-up audio that starts their day in a calmer way.
When Travelling: It’s a lifesaver for long car journeys, providing screen-free entertainment, and helps keep bedtime familiar even in new places.
For Learning: The record-your-own-card feature is great for more than just stories. My daughter loves spelling tests, so I’ve recorded myself reading out her spelling words so she can practise independently whenever she likes.
As a Daily Radio: Yoto Radio is brilliant, with fun, engaging topics for kids. We often have it playing in the background instead of the TV, which has been a great switch for our household.
