We recently finished reading The Twits Next Door and loved it so much that I went searching to see if the authors had written anything else. That’s how we discovered The Great Dream Robbery — and it turned out to be a brilliant bedtime read.

I read this with my 9-year-old daughter, and we were hooked almost instantly. The idea of Maya’s dad being trapped inside a dream felt totally different to anything we’d read before, and we were both really curious to see where the story would go.

It’s one of those books that pulls you in quickly and keeps surprising you in the best way.

What Is The Great Dream Robbery About?

Without giving too much away, the story follows Maya as she discovers a secret world of dreams and sets out on an adventure to rescue her dad. Along the way, she meets a group of characters who help her navigate the dream world — and things get very imaginative, very chaotic, and very funny.

One of my favourite parts of the story is how the children defeat the bad guys. Instead of using weapons, they use pure imagination — things like giant dancing unicorns and roller-skate shoes. It’s silly, clever, and exactly the kind of creativity kids love.

Why We Loved It

There were so many moments that kept my daughter engaged and excited to read the next chapter.

We especially loved:

• The imaginative dream-world setting

• The funny, slightly chaotic ideas

• The creative ways the children solve problems

• The changing font styles, which make the book easier and more fun to read

I also really liked the characters. Teddy was a favourite in our house — super positive, funny, and just enjoying the adventure. Maya is a lovely main character too. I liked how she starts off feeling a little withdrawn but gradually grows in confidence, helped by her relationship with her dad. It’s a really gentle but powerful message for creative children.

A Lovely Message for Kids

One thing that surprised me was how thoughtful the book is underneath all the fun.

It touches on:

• Worries and fears

• How our dreams can reflect what we’re feeling

• The idea that sometimes we need to face our fears rather than run from them

• The power of imagination and creativity

I think it could be especially comforting for children who have big feelings or anxieties, making it a really thoughtful read when it comes to supporting children’s wellbeing through stories. It’s a positive, uplifting story that encourages confidence and creativity.
