The Baby-Proofing Blind Spot: New Research Reveals the Safety Gap Facing UK Families
Most Parents Know Baby-Proofing Matters – So Why Do So Many Put It Off?
When babies start crawling, pulling themselves up and exploring every corner of the house, many parents suddenly realise just how many potential hazards are hiding in plain sight.
Most of us know baby-proofing is important, but knowing where to start can feel overwhelming. Between cupboards, stairs, doors, furniture and everyday household items, it can be difficult to know which areas need attention first.
New research from home safety brand Fred suggests many families are experiencing exactly the same challenge.
As Child Safety Week (1–7 June) approaches, new research from premium home safety brand Fred highlights a disconnect between what parents know about home safety, and what actually happens in practice.
The aim of this insightful survey is to better understand attitudes towards baby-proofing, uncovering a clear gap between intention and action.
While an overwhelming 94% agree baby-proofing is essential, many delay when it comes to taking action because they "don't know where to start".
In fact, eight out of 10 (81%) admit they have avoided baby-proofing certain areas of their home altogether because it felt too difficult or inconvenient to do so.
This gap between intention and action is particularly noticeable when it comes to one of the most critical safety measures in the home, stair gates.
Stairs remain one of the highest-risk areas for young children, yet fewer than a third (31%) had purchased a safety gate.
For those who have a safety gate, 87% had purchased two or more, indicating that once parents engage with home safety solutions, they quickly identify multiple risk points around the home.
The findings also reveal what parents are really looking for when they do invest in baby-proofing.
Ease of installation and effectiveness are understandably the most important features, which underlines a key message: if a product feels complicated or time-consuming to install, it is less likely to appeal.
Meanwhile, 75% say they are influenced by reviews and recommendations, showing how reassurance and trust play a crucial role in decision-making.
Together, these insights paint a clear picture: parents care deeply about safety, but many feel overwhelmed by the process of implementing it or put it off altogether due to feeling overwhelmed.
Stair gates are a simple but vital product to help reduce risk, especially as babies become more mobile and curious. However, choosing the right type of gate for the right location, and ensuring it is installed correctly, can make a significant difference in preventing accidents.
Things Parents Often Forget to Baby-Proof
Alongside staircases, parents often overlook:
- Low cupboards containing cleaning products
- Heavy furniture that could tip if climbed
- Doors that can trap little fingers
- Pet food and water bowls
- Electrical cables and charging stations
Many families find baby-proofing becomes much easier when tackled one room at a time rather than trying to do the entire house at once.
Introducing Fred Clear View Safety Stair Gates
Fred's Clear View Safety Gates are designed to offer parents a premium combination of safety, simplicity and unobtrusive design.
With both pressure-fit and screw-fit options available, families can choose the right solution for different areas of their home, without compromising on performance or aesthetics.
At the heart of both designs is Fred's signature clear panel, which uses a unique professional grade, clear acrylic blend, so parents can ensure their child's safety without having to sacrifice the aesthetics of their home.
Pressure Fit
The pressure-fit gate offers a flexible solution, ideal for use at the bottom of stairs or between rooms.
Installed using pressure rather than screws, it allows for quick setup and easy repositioning if needed, so it's perfect for busy family homes.
A small bar at the base helps secure the gate in place, but this also means that it should not be used at the top of stairs.
The built-in pressure lift allows the gate to be operated with one hand with ease, but is still impossible for little ones to open.
The gate can also be opened in both directions, with the option of a one-way swing setting, perfect for passing through when holding a baby in your arms.
Screw Fit
Designed for maximum security, the screw-fit gate is the essential choice for high-risk areas such as the top of stairs.
By fixing directly into the wall, it provides a permanent and highly stable barrier with no threshold bar, eliminating trip hazards in critical spaces.
This makes it the safest and most appropriate option where a fall could result in serious injury.

Important Safety Guidance
- Screw-fit gates should always be used at the top of stairs for maximum safety.
- Pressure-fit gates are suitable for the bottom of stairs or room-to-room use, but must not be used at the top of stairs.
- Pressure-fit gates include a base bar, which can present a trip hazard if used incorrectly.
- Both gate types are designed for solid fixing points and are not suitable for installation on glass staircases.
Final Thoughts
Baby-proofing can feel overwhelming, especially when you are trying to identify every potential hazard at once.
The good news is that small changes can make a big difference. Tackling one area at a time and focusing on the highest-risk spaces first can help make the process feel much more manageable.
Research like this highlights that many parents share the same concerns and challenges. The key is not aiming for perfection overnight, but taking practical steps to make your home safer as your child grows and becomes more mobile.
Fred's stair gates are available to purchase directly from the Fred website, alongside the brand's wider range of premium home safety solutions.
