Our review of Hedrin Headlice Shampoo and Leave-in Mousse treatments

We have reached the age in our house where we are frequently getting generic emails sent home from schools saying that there are headlice going around the school and asking us to treat our children in case they have them. Cue a quick trip to the local supermarket where there is a sea of products, each claiming to combat headlice in their own way. Luckily most of these products have evolved quite a lot from when I was a child. I still have very clear memories of sitting outside in the garden with my headlice lotion on as a child, unable to go in the house until it was time to wash it off as the smell was so unbelievably bad! Thinking about it I can still feel my scalp stinging from strong lotion!

Luckily for me, the team at Hedrin got in touch recently and asked if I would like to review some of their products, and I was more than happy to oblige!

Right on cue, just as the latest headlice email hit my inbox,  my Hedrin products were delivered to my door! So I was keen to give them a try.

The first product I decided to try was the Hedrin Shampoo. Here is a quick lowdown on how this is formulated and a few key features:

Hedrin Shampoo

Hedrin Shampoo is a specially formulated solution for treating head lice and nits. This pesticide-free shampoo not only helps to eradicate lice effectively but also ensures ease of use during the application process. Unlike traditional treatments, this shampoo is used like a regular hair wash, making it less disruptive for children and parents alike.

  • Features: Pesticide-free, gentle on the scalp, and clinically proven to kill lice and eggs in one wash.
  • How to Use: Apply the shampoo to dry hair, ensuring the scalp and roots are thoroughly covered. Massage it in well, leave it for a short duration, then rinse off. It acts quickly, making the process manageable even for children who find long treatments challenging.
  • Unique Selling Points: This product works while also keeping hair soft and manageable, avoiding the strong chemical smells associated with some lice treatments

picture of Hedrin headlice shampoo for a product review I was really impressed with this shampoo. I was initially a bit apprehensive about having to use lots of the lotion for it to cover all of my daughter's dry hair, but the shampoo was actually really easy to use and covered her hair without needing to use access amounts of the lotion. The next thing I liked was that I didn’t have to leave the shampoo on for too long before washing it off. Previous headlice treatments I have tried (from other brands) have needed to stay on overnight, which was a bit of a nightmare ( Think greasy pillows and having to get up extra early to wash it all out in the mornings! We don’t need anything more to do on already busy school mornings!). So this shampoo fits into a evening bath routine really well. From previous experience of very greasy headlice lotion, I did use a bit of normal shampoo when washing her hair, but I don’t think I actually needed to do this step as the shampoo rinsed out really well. There was no bad smell and it did the job perfectly.

After washing it all out I used the handy headlice comb that came in the box to go through my daughter's hair to get out any remnants of headlice ( Ooh it’s making my own head itch just thinking about it, even though she didn’t actually have any).

After combing through my daughter's hair I decided to be extra careful and try out the Hedrin treat and leave in mousse.

Here is a bit more info on this product:

Hedrin Treat & Leave-In Mousse

The Treat & Leave-In Mousse is a lightweight, water-based foam designed for fuss-free lice treatment. Its mousse formulation spreads easily, making it simple to apply even on active children who may find sitting still difficult.

  • Features: Non-sticky, odor-free, and safe for sensitive skin. It’s free of asthma triggers, ensuring it’s suitable for all family members.
  • How to Use: Apply the mousse to dry hair, ensuring coverage from root to tip. Let it dry naturally or blow dry it, leaving it in place for at least 8 hours (or overnight) before rinsing out. A second application is recommended 7 days later to complete the lice treatment cycle.
  • Unique Selling Points: This product allows children to carry on with their day—whether at play, school, or bedtime—without the interruption of washing out the treatment immediately. The non-greasy formula rinses out easily without leaving any residue

picture of how to use Hedrin headlice treat and leave in mousse I really liked the flexibility of how I could use this product. You can use this straight on dry hair as a treatment before hair wash day, or I could add it to towel-dried hair after a hair wash. You can then either leave this to dry naturally or blow dry, whichever works for you.

This mousse was really easy to apply and I didn’t need to use very much to cover all of her hair.

After using both of these products I blow-dried my daughter's hair. I was a bit nervous at this point as with previous headlice treatments her hair has been left very lank and greasy, but again I was pleasantly surprised with this product. There was a small patch of hair at the roots at the back of her head that was a little greasy (this could easily have been down to my rinsing skills or using too much of the mousse) but the rest of her hair dried beautifully.

Conclusion

Overall I was really impressed with both of these products and will certainly be using them moving forward. I would recommend these products to anyone looking for quick and effective headlice treatment.
