Book Review: Mummy Fairy and Me by Sophie Kinsella

If you're looking for a funny, heartwarming story that mixes everyday family life with a little bit of fairy magic, Mummy Fairy and Me by Sophie Kinsella is a fantastic choice.

My 8-year-old daughter and I read this together as part of our bedtime story routine, and it quickly became a favourite — full of laughs, lovely characters, and just the right amount of magical chaos!

🧚‍♀️ What’s the Story About?

The book follows a young girl called Ella, who has a big secret — her mum is actually a fairy! But not just any fairy… a trainee fairy who’s still learning how to control her magic.

Whenever she stamps her feet, claps her hands, wiggles her bottom, and says the magic word (“marshmallow!”), she transforms into Mummy Fairy.

Of course, fairy spells don’t always go to plan. In fact, they usually go a bit wrong — which leads to all sorts of silly moments that had us both in fits of laughter. One of our favourites? When she tried to clean the house with magic and ended up magicking a cow into the house!

📖 Why We Loved It

  • Perfect bedtime length: The chapters are short, which is great for tired little brains (and tired parents too!).
  • Great for early readers: The text is easy to follow, with lovely large print and illustrations that break up the page.
  • Fun for grown-ups to read aloud: I found myself genuinely laughing while reading it — it’s got that cheeky humour that works for kids and adults.
  • Keeps the magic going: At the back of the book there’s a wordsearch, spot-the-difference and even a recipe to try! My daughter was thrilled — it turned bedtime into a whole experience.

📚 Who’s It For?

I’d recommend Mummy Fairy and Me for:

  • Children aged 5+ as a read-aloud story
  • Confident readers aged 6–8 who want to read it independently
  • Any child who loves a bit of magic, mischief, and imaginative stories
  • Parents looking for a series to get stuck into — there are more books to enjoy if your child falls in love with Ella’s world!

💬 Final Thoughts

This book ticked all the boxes for us. It was light, funny, and genuinely magical. My daughter even picked it up to read again on her own the next morning — and to me, that’s always the biggest compliment a book can get.

We’re already planning to read the rest of the series next!
