Wildwood Devon with Kids: A Peaceful Woodland Day Out You’ll Love

If you’re looking for a family day out in Devon that feels a little bit different from the usual busy theme parks and play centres, Wildwood Devon might just surprise you.

Set within beautiful woodland grounds near Escot House, Wildwood Devon offers a slower, more nature-led experience - with incredible animals like bears, wolves and lynx, alongside plenty for children to explore along the way.

We recently visited over the Easter holidays with friends, and it turned out to be one of those days out that everyone genuinely enjoyed (and didn’t want to leave). Here’s our honest review, including what we loved, what to expect, and whether it’s worth visiting with children.

Our Family Experience at Wildwood Devon

We visited with our two children (aged 9 and 11), along with our friends whose children range from 4 to 10, so a really good mix of ages.

We stayed for around four hours and managed to see and do most things, but we easily could have stayed longer. It really does work as either a half-day or full-day trip depending on how slowly you want to take it (and how long your children want to stay - ours definitely weren’t ready to leave!).

The Animals at Wildwood Devon

The animals were a real highlight of the day, and Wildwood has some you don’t always see elsewhere.

The absolute standout for all of us was the bears. We were so lucky to catch them in a really playful mood, chasing each other around their huge enclosure. At one point they even got into the water (which the children thought was absolutely hilarious!). It was one of those moments that you just don’t forget.

We were also really lucky with animals like the wolves and lynx, who came right up close to the fences, which felt really special.

As with any wildlife park, some animals are a bit hit-and-miss (and rightly so, they’re not there to perform). We tried our best to quietly tempt the otters out, but only managed a little glimpse, which honestly just adds to that more natural, wildlife feel of the place.

A More Natural Alternative to a Typical Zoo

One of the biggest things that stood out was how different Wildwood feels compared to a traditional zoo.

It’s set in proper woodland, which makes it feel calm, spacious, and really immersive. The enclosures feel more like natural habitats, and the whole experience is much more about being in nature rather than rushing between attractions.

We went right at the end of the Easter holidays, and it was lovely and quiet, which definitely added to that peaceful feel.

Things for Kids to Do

There’s a really nice balance of animals and play areas, which keeps children engaged the whole way round.

There’s a small indoor soft play area, which I actually really liked, it felt easy to keep an eye on the children while sitting nearby.

Around the park, there are also little play features dotted between the enclosures, like a drop slide and rope swings with the most amazing views.

And honestly, the woodland itself is part of the fun! There are so many opportunities for climbing trees and exploring, which my children absolutely loved.

There are also talks throughout the day (although we didn’t manage to catch one), and I believe there are feeding experiences too.

All of the children in our group stayed completely engaged the entire time, and were genuinely disappointed when it was time to leave, which always says everything!

What We Loved Most

Without a doubt - the bears. They completely made the day for us.

A close second was having our picnic lunch in the raised picnic area in the middle of the maze, such a fun little touch and something a bit different.

Value for Money

We really felt like it was worth the cost, especially for the experience you get.

Our friends mentioned that a family membership is around £10 a month, which honestly feels like amazing value if you live locally and would visit more than once.

Our Honest Verdict

We genuinely couldn’t find anything negative to say about our visit.

It’s such a peaceful, natural, and well thought-out place for a family day out, especially if you’re looking for something a bit slower paced and outdoorsy.

We would absolutely go again, and we’d 100% recommend it to other families.

Who It’s Best For

Wildwood Devon really works for a wide range of ages.

Our group ranged from 4 to 11 and all of the children loved it. I also think it would be lovely for toddlers during term time when it’s even quieter, perfect for a gentle wander and some fresh air.
