Thornhill Junior & Infant School raise over £1.6k at Summer Fayre

Funds raised to give pupils equal opportunities in and outside of school

Thornhill Junior & Infant School in Dewsbury has recently held its summer fayre, raising over £1,684 through the generosity of the community.

The fayre was the first PTA event open for families to come into the school since the pandemic, and brought in over 250 people, despite the rain, to support the school.

The enthusiastic team of volunteers ensured there were a variety of stalls catered for everyone. The team were helped by Year 6 pupils, who put their entrepreneurial skills to the test in setting up, organising stalls, and taking charge of selling refreshments and raffle tickets.

Popular stalls such as Teddy Tombola, Lucky Dips and Punch Balloons were a sell-out, and children were keen to have a go on the Sponge Soaker to try and soak their teachers.

Friends of Thornhill J&I School PTA, newly formed in September, have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to raise vital funds for the school, children and community by hosting various fundraisers throughout the year, including Movie Nights, Coin Challenge, Luxury Hampers and an Easter Raffle.

The money raised has given pupils access to enrichment opportunities in and outside of school, including the Year 6 Leavers’ Disco, Owls After-School & Holiday Club excursions, and treats for the Winning House Team.

From September 2023, the PTA’s vision is to ensure all children will be able to partake in educational visits and are looking at ways to raise funds to ease the financial burden on families.

Jen Rylance, Acting Headteacher at Thornhill Junior & Infant School, said: “I am incredibly proud of the achievements of our newly formed PTA.

“Their energy, enthusiasm and commitment to supporting our children has been amazing! The money they have raised, with the help of our community, will ensure that our children have access to all of the fantastic opportunities they deserve.

“I cannot wait to see what they get up to next!”

Friends of Thornhill J&I PTA are already thinking of the next fundraising venture for the new academic year and are keen to introduce new ideas. This friendly and enthusiastic group are always looking for new members to come on board.

Thornhill Junior and Infant school forms part of Focus-Trust, a charitable primary school trust based in the North West of England and West Yorkshire, that aims to provide great schools at the heart of communities where children thrive, achieve, and succeed.
