Is Coding a Must-Have Skill for UK Children? A Parent's Guide to the Computing Curriculum

My daughter came home in Year 3 and announced that she had spent the morning debugging. I nodded along as though this were a normal thing for an eight-year-old to say, then looked it up after she'd gone to bed.

She was right, as it happens. Debugging is on the curriculum, and it has been for over a decade. Most of us who were at school before 2014 did something called ICT, which in my case meant a term of Microsoft Publisher and a certificate I never used again. What our children do now is a different subject with a different name, and quite a lot of parents have no clear picture of what's in it.

So here's what's actually required, what's actually happening, and whether you need to do anything about it at home. Which is the bit most of us really want to know.

What schools in England are meant to teach

Computing replaced ICT in the national curriculum in 2014, and it's compulsory from the first year of primary right through to the end of Key Stage 4.

At Key Stage 1, so Years 1 and 2, children are expected to understand what algorithms are, to create and debug simple programs, and to use logical reasoning to predict what a program will do. In practice this often looks like a floor robot being told to go forward, forward, turn, and the whole class shouting when it bumps into a chair leg.

By Key Stage 2, it gets noticeably more serious. Children are meant to design, write and debug programs that achieve a specific goal, break problems down into smaller parts, and use sequence, selection and repetition. They're also expected to work with variables and with different forms of input and output. If those words mean nothing to you, that's fine, but they're not warm-up concepts. Selection is the "if this, then that" logic that underpins essentially all software. A Year 5 child is supposed to be using it.

Key Stage 3 moves on to at least two programming languages, one of them text-based rather than block-based, along with data representation and how computer systems actually work.

One caveat worth knowing: the national curriculum applies to maintained schools in England. Academies and free schools aren't legally bound by it, though most teach something comparable. And if you're in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, the framework is different again, with digital competence running through the Curriculum for Wales, technologies within Curriculum for Excellence, and Using ICT as a cross-curricular skill in Northern Ireland. Same broad direction, different paperwork.

What's actually happening, which is not quite the same thing

Here is where it gets less tidy.

The independent Curriculum and Assessment Review led by Professor Becky Francis, which reported in 2025, found that teaching time for computing at Key Stage 3 had fallen from 4% of the timetable to 3% between 2011/12 and 2024/25. Not a collapse, but the wrong direction for a subject the government keeps describing as essential. GCSE Computer Science uptake has plateaued at around 12 to 13% of the cohort, and entries in summer 2025 were down 4.4% on the previous year.

There's also a long-standing shortage of specialist teachers, which means a fair number of children are being taught programming by someone doing their best with it alongside another subject entirely. That's not a criticism of those teachers. It's just the reality of the staffing.

The number that made me put my coffee down was the gender split. The Francis review reported that around 6% of girls take GCSE Computer Science, against roughly 20% of boys. Girls made up 22.6% of entries in 2025, which was actually a slight improvement on the year before, and that tells you how low the baseline is.

If you have a daughter, that statistic is worth sitting with for a moment. It is not a difference in aptitude. It's a difference in who decides, somewhere around Year 7 or 8, that this subject is for them.

What's changing

The government has accepted that the current GCSE is too narrow and has announced plans to replace it with a broader qualification, keeping programming and algorithms but adding data literacy, artificial intelligence and the ethics of how technology gets used. There's also talk of a new Level 3 qualification in data science and AI for sixteen to eighteen-year-olds.

I'd treat the timescales with some caution, because curriculum reform in this country tends to take longer than announced. But the direction is clear enough, and the emphasis on understanding AI rather than simply being told not to use it strikes me as overdue.

So do you need to do anything at home?

Honestly? For most families, no. Your child will get what they need at school and the world will keep turning.

But I'd make an exception in two situations.

The first is if your child shows any flicker of interest. If they're modding things in Minecraft, or asking how apps work, or trying to make something rather than just use it, that's worth feeding. School computing is often only an hour a fortnight, which is not enough to get anywhere with a genuine interest.

The second is if you've got a daughter approaching secondary school. Given those figures, the window in which a girl decides whether this subject belongs to her seems to close somewhere in Key Stage 2 or early Key Stage 3, well before anyone chooses a GCSE.

If either applies, the useful thing is something structured that doesn't feel like more school. We've used Codemonkey, which teaches through puzzles and small games rather than lessons, and moves children from drag-and-drop blocks up to typed Python as they're ready. That progression matters more than it sounds, because the block-to-text jump is exactly where a lot of children quietly give up. My daughter thinks she's playing. I'm not going to correct her.

Coding clubs are the other route, and many areas have free ones, often run through libraries or by volunteers. Ask at school, because they usually know what's local.

The mistake I nearly made

For about a month I turned this into a project. Scheduled sessions, a chart, mild nagging.

It went exactly as you'd expect. She dug her heels in, I got irritated, and the whole thing acquired the flavour of homework, which is the one thing it must never become. When I dropped it and simply left it available, she came back to it on her own within a fortnight.

Is coding a must-have skill? I don't think that framing helps anybody, and it puts pressure on parents who are already carrying plenty. What I'd say instead is this. Our children are growing up inside systems that somebody designed, and there's a meaningful difference between a child who accepts those systems as weather and a child who understands that people built them, on purpose, and could have built them differently.

That understanding is worth having, whether or not it ever appears on a results slip.
