Top 5 activities to teach your child to spell words

When I started trying to teach my children about simple words I found it all a bit daunting and didn’t really know where to begin. We started off sitting down and writing out the words, but my children lost interest pretty quickly. So I came up with some more creative ways to teach them, here are my top 5 activity ideas.

  1. Using cars and a car mat – My son has always been car mad so I have used cars in many ways to help him learn new things. For this activity we used his car mat and in the parking spaces I stuck on letters to form simple words (dog, cat etc). I stuck the letters onto the roofs of his toy cars, he then had to drive his cars around his mat and park the cars in the corresponding spaces. This was also great for his letter recognition and once his cars were all parked we sounded out the letters and I got him to try and read the words.
  2. Phonics cards – Over lockdown we got ourselves some great phonics cards (Our school uses the Read write inc cards), which were fab as on one side of the card they just had the letter and on the reverse side it said how to sound the letter out in the way they are taught. After sounding out all of the letters I placed them on the floor and spelt out some simple words and we worked on reading them together.
  3. Duplo Blocks – Similar to the cars activity, I have stuck lots of individual letters onto duplo blocks and we have used these letters to spell out words.
  4. Sand play – This could be done at the beach or just in the sand tray at home. Using your fingers or a stick, you can practice drawing different letters and words in the sand. You could try drawing a letter first then get your child to copy you.
  5. Magnetic letters – The type you usually keep on your fridge are great! You could write some simple words on a piece of paper and ask your child to find the letters and put them together to make the word.
